City College of Cagayan de Oro (CCCDO) continues to expand its international academic engagement through the participation of Prof. Jonathan A. Madronero, Associate Professor V, at the 12th International Conference on Teaching Statistics (ICOTS 12), held from July 12 to 17, 2026, at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre (BCEC) in Brisbane, Australia. The conference, organized by the International Association for Statistical Education (IASE), brought together educators, researchers, and practitioners from around the world to discuss innovations in statistics and data science education.
During the international conference, Prof. Madronero presented his research paper entitled "Statistical Principles in Focus: How Well Do College Students Understand the Fundamentals?" The study contributes to discussions on statistical literacy by examining college students' understanding of fundamental statistical concepts and highlighting the importance of developing statistical reasoning to support evidence-informed decision-making.
In addition to presenting his research, Prof. Madronero served as Session Chair for the Main Topic session, "Innovations in Primary School Statistics Education." In this role, he facilitated discussions among presenters from Germany and Spain, encouraging the exchange of ideas on innovative approaches to teaching statistics and strengthening international collaboration in statistics education.
As the institution's Research Ethics Committee Chair, Prof. Madronero also highlighted the importance of ethical practices in data collection, analysis, reporting, and stewardship. He emphasized that responsible and ethical use of data is fundamental to producing credible research, promoting transparency, and supporting sound decisions in education, policy, and community development.
Prof. Madronero's participation aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) by promoting statistical literacy and innovative teaching practices; SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) by advocating ethical and transparent research practices; and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by fostering international collaboration and knowledge exchange among educators and researchers.
Through participation in international conferences such as ICOTS 12, CCCDO continues to engage with the global academic community, contributing to discussions on statistics education, research ethics, and the responsible use of data in advancing sustainable development.
